IDYLLIC SPOTS IN AND AROUND MELLERUD

Mellerud and Dalsland have numerous wonderful excursion destinations full of fantastic sights to explore and discover. Vita Sandars Camping is an excellent starting point and home base to visit all of the beautiful places in and around Dalsland!

HÅVERUD AQUEDUCT

The aqueduct of Håverud is a must-see for all Mellerud visitors. Originally built in 1868, the iron trench was designed to guide boat traffic across the vigorous rapids. The aqueduct itself is 32 metres long and contains 33,000 rivets. Both a highway and railway bridge can take guests up to a maximum of 124.67 feet above the locks to get a full view of the majestic scene. Håverud is also home to a spectacular canal and a fascinating Local History Museum (hembygdsmuseum).

DALABORG CASTLE

The 1380s was a milestone time in history for Sweden and Norway. It was at this castle that Queen Margareta, regent of Norway and Denmark, was also recognized as the regent of Sweden in 1388. Here you can experience the richness and fascination of history with a trip to Dalaborg Castle. Plus you can combine your visit with a lovely picnic as it has plenty of spots for a short break outdoors. In early June there is a medieval day — a day full of fanfare with knights, medieval ships, and even a market square. A model of the ruined castle can also be seen in the Mellerud Museum.

BOLSTAD CHURCH

This medieval church dates back to the 12th century and is probably the oldest church in the province of Dalsland.

CHURCH OF SKÅLLERUD

Not only one of the most beautiful churches in Dalsland, but also the oldest preserved wooden church. The church dates back to as early as the 1590s.

Museum

The museum in the Tinghuset is well worth a visit. Here you can see exactly how the people in this area lived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

EKHOLMEN MANOR

The history of this manor goes back to the early 16th century. The manor has preserved a suite used by King Charles XII during his travels through Dalsland.

ROSTOCK HEALING SPRING

Today the area also has a local museum along with a café which is open all summer long. There is also a fantastic herb garden that has recently been restored.

If you are interested in archaeology, make sure you don’t miss Kårehögen, the largest iron tomb in the province. According to legend, the remains of King Kåre reside here, wrapped in a traditional ox skin.
