The Gateway to Dalsland
The Aqueduct in Håverud
The Håverud Aqueduct is one of Dalsland’s most famous attractions and a popular destination for day trips during the summer. This impressive structure is located along the Dalsland Canal and attracts many visitors each year who want to experience its unique combination of nature and engineering.
A unique aqueduct from the 19th century
The aqueduct was inaugurated in 1868 and was built as part of the Dalsland Canal. It was designed by engineer Nils Ericson after it became clear that it was not possible to build a conventional lock at that location due to the strong current and the difficult terrain.
The solution was an aqueduct—a type of water-filled bridge where boats can pass over the rapids in a metal trough. The structure is approximately 32 meters long and consists of a steel trough held together by tens of thousands of rivets.
One of Dalsland's most visited attractions
Today, the aqueduct is one of Dalsland’s biggest tourist attractions. Many visitors come here to watch boats pass through the aqueduct and on through the locks of the Dalsland Canal.
The area around the aqueduct is also a pleasant place to stroll. There are scenic viewpoints, walking paths, and opportunities to take a break at a nearby café or restaurant.
