The Gateway to Dalsland
The Dalsland Canal
The Dalsland Canal is one of Sweden’s most beautiful waterways and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Dalsland. The canal winds its way through a landscape of lakes, forests, and small communities. Here, you can watch boats pass through the locks, take a boat tour on the canal, or simply enjoy the surroundings of the small canal towns.
A historic canal through the Dalsland countryside
The Dalsland Canal was inaugurated in 1868 and was built to create a transportation route through the region. The canal consists of a chain of lakes connected by locks and short stretches of canal.
In total, there are about thirty locks along the canal’s route, which stretches from Lake Vänern up through Dalsland and on into Värmland.
Experience the canal from land or water
There are many ways to experience the Dalsland Canal. During the summer, passenger boats pass through the locks, offering a chance to see the canal from the water.
Many visitors also choose to kayak or canoe along parts of the canal, or to stop at various locks to watch the boats pass through. There are also cafes, walking paths, and lookout points near several of the locks.

A popular outing from Vita Sandars Camping
From Vita Sandars Camping, it’s easy to take a trip to the Dalsland Canal. Several of the canal’s most famous sites, such as Håverud and its aqueduct, are within easy reach of the campground.
A visit to the canal is perfect as a day trip during your vacation and offers a chance to experience both the nature and history of Dalsland.
